The second largest bird in the world
The emu is found only in Australia and is the second largest bird in the world. Although it has small wings that are not suitable for flight, it makes up for it with its powerful long legs that allow it to sprint at speeds of up to 50 km per hour.
The unique male emu protects and incubates its eggs for eight weeks and rarely leaves the nest to eat and drink. Baby emus are born with distinctive brown stripes for camouflage and become independent around seven months of age.
Pattern of an emu family
The reverse of the coin depicts an adult emu walking alongside five cubs. The background depicts a desert landscape, sky and sun. The image features the inscription "AUSTRALIAN EMU", the weight of the coin, the purity, the year 2025 and The Perth Mint's mint mark "P".
